Lieutenant Governor Bob Barnes with Kiwanis Division 8 held his first Douglas Kiwanis meeting on Feb. 20 at the Douglas Visitors Center.

Barnes along with Bisbee Kiwanis member will be implementing a club in Douglas.

The Douglas Kiwanis will be a satellite club of the existing Bisbee Club which will prevent the requirement for a duplicate leadership structure.

The Douglas Club will have a representative on the board of directors of the existing Kiwanis Club.

The Douglas Kiwanis sole purpose will be to inspire the Douglas students to do well and to become productive leaders.

Barnes first step is developing a Builders Club at Ray Borane and Huber Middle School.

The purpose of Kiwanis programs is to foster leadership development and community service by our students, he said.

Builders Club is a “student-led” community service organization that operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body.

The club will be sponsored by community members who become Kiwanis members. Kiwanis empowers people at every stage of life to become competent, capable, and compassionate leaders by helping them learn to help others.

Barnes is also asking community members to become Kiwanis members.

Members will meet once a month the individual, business or agency becomes the member and can be represented by anyone they wish to select.

The cost of membership is $100 per year or $25 per month for four months.
