Senator McCain makes trip to Douglas

Senator John McCain met with Douglas Mayor Danny Ortega Jr., Agua Prieta Mayor Irma Villalobos and local law enforcement and Customs and Border Patrol Officials in a closed to the public meeting at the Gadsden on Feb. 18.


The purpose to the meeting was immigration reform and border security according to Mayor Ortega.

A bipartisan group of senators including McCain and Jeff Flake want assurances on border security as Congress weighs what could be the biggest changes to immigration law in nearly 30 years.

Arizona is the only state with both of its senators working on immigration reform in Congress, a sign of the state's widely debated border security issues.

Immigration activists and elected officials say it's only natural for Arizona to continue to take the forefront in the national conversation on immigration after years of internal debate on the topic.

McCain also meet with local ranchers to discuss border security. Douglas is safe but the rural areas are not, Gary Thrasher local rancher said. “Border Patrol has now pushed the drugs and illegals to the rural areas and that’s where we are not safe.”

The U.S. media was not invited to either meeting but the Mexican media was present for the meeting at the Gadsden

    " My grandfather came to the United States from canada and was treated worse than many of the immigrants of today, there was no welfare or meduical vcare for him. He worked making his farm sucessful as well as in Granite Sheds without air purifiers and eventually he was to die of the emphsema. If you can guarantee thatr immigrants let into this country will receive NO benefits that we have paid taxes for until they have contibuted through their work as much as my grandparents and my family has contibuted to government taxes then maybe we can start legalizing aliens. Until then I say no reward for violating the laws of our country, it will only encourage more to violate the laws. "
