The Douglas Lady Bulldogs tennis team played three matches in three days last week and won two of three suffering their first loss of the season in the process.

The Lady Bulldogs began the week beating Amphi 8-1 March 4.

According to Douglas’ tennis coach Ken Cormier Amphi had just three players and he played his four, five and six seed players against them.

Fernanda Quiroz won her match 7-5, 6-2; Andrea Quiroz won 6-2, 6-1 and Sienna Martinez was a 6-0, 6-0 winner.

In doubles Kim Ruiz and Martinez lost 8-4.

All other matches were forfeits.

“It was disappointing to travel all the way to Tucson, but it was good experience for younger players,” the coach said.

On Tuesday, March 5 Douglas was in Benson and came away with an 8-1 win.

Marissa Aguirre, playing No. 1 singles, lost her match 8-4; Erika Romero won her match 8-0 at the No. 2 singles spot. Ruiz won her No. 3 singles match 8-2; Fernanda Quiroz was a 8-2 winner at No. 4 singles; Andrea Quiroz was a 8-3 winner; Sienna Martinez won her match 8-1. In doubles Aguirre and Ruiz won their match 8-3; Romero and F. Quiroz were 8-3 winners while A. Quiroz and Martinez were 8-1 winners.

“Benson has a great program for a small school, and most of the matches were very competitive,” the coach said.

On Wednesday, March 6 Douglas lost to Nogales 8-1.

The lone win came at No. 2 singles were Romero posted a 6-3, 6-2 win.

No other scores were reported.

“Nogales has a very strong team, and although we played well we were just no match for them,” the coach said. “I was well pleased with Erika’s performance in her strongest match of the season, and Marissa Aguirre and Sienna Martinez also played very well in their matches.”

The coach said Nogales’ No. 1 player Cristina Oropeza is nationally ranked and has a tennis scholarship to a Colorado College.

Friday’s match with Buena was re-scheduled for April 15th.

The Lady Bulldogs are back in action March 25 when they head to Tombstone.
