Former Bulldog awarded Man of the Year

Former Douglas Bulldog David Luna son of Arnold and Clementia Luna was awarded Mesa’s Man of the Year in February in Mesa.

Luna graduated from Douglas High in 1974 then received his Bachelor’s in radio-television production from the University of Arizona (1979); master’s in mass communication from Arizona State University (1999); and his doctorate in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University (2012).

Luna, director of educational television for Mesa Public Schools since 1988 and a longtime videographer, has worked for the Mesa United Way, and the Hispanic community and education circles.

He and wife, Hilda, have two grown up daughter’s one living in Manhattan and the other in Seattle.

Luna is currently a New Leaf board member; Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens board member; Latino Town Hall co-chair; Mesa Community College Commission on Excellence in Education member; Latino Advisory Committee member.

“I believe that each of us has a responsibility to give back to the community in which we live in,” he stated to azcentral.com. “I also believe that we all possess a quality or a skill set that can benefit others. I try to use what I’ve been given to improve the lives of others.”

His next community goals he said, “is to work with parents to help them to prepare their children for the future academically and professionally.”

    " You are great example to the youth of this community and a former Bulldogs! We need men and women like David to speak to the children in Douglas who are willfully encouraged by drug cartels and gangs.They need to have respectable and responsible adults mentor these kids in our community.Children are most impressionable when they are very young. I ask our Mayor to lead our community in accomplishing this necessary and vital role we should all partake in! "
