Thirteen teams were in Douglas Saturday competing in the 82nd Annual Ted James Douglas Invitational.

In the girls meet Salpointe Catholic came in first with 174 points followed by Buena in second with 107 and Douglas third with 76.

“We had 13 teams compete; great weather with great running,” Douglas’ track coach Donna Savill said. “The Invite had four records broken by the girls. In the 100 and 200 meter by Salpointe’s Michaela Crunkleton-Wilson; 300 Hurdles, Salpointe’s Alyssa Thompson and the triple jump by Douglas’ Grecia Castillo.”

The coach said the Douglas girls had a tremendous showing.

“We qualified many of our athletes for state in our first invitational of the season,” the coach said. “The girls have been working very hard in practice and staying healthy being injury free. We are all very proud on their performance.”

Castillo got things going for Douglas right away winning the triple jump with a state qualifying jump of 35'2.25" which broke the old meet record of 34’8” that was set in 1994.

Castillo was also third in the long jump with a 15’6” and fifth in the high jump with a 4’8”

In the 100 Hurdles Kayla Fields placed second with a state qualifying time of 16.89 seconds. Melissa Rodriquez was 12th with a time of 19.05.

In the 100-meters Barbara Jordan finished fourth and Marlene Gonzalez 18th with times of 13.60 and 14.60 seconds.

Laura Hurtado placed seventh in the 1600 with a time of 6:09.

Elyzabeth Duarte placed ninth in the 400 meters turning in a time of 1:07.

Fields finished second in the 300 hurdles with a state qualifying time of 48.20. Rodriguez was fifth with a 52.01.

In the 800-meters Karla Loreto was eighth and Laura Blair 11th finishing with times of 2:43 and 2:47 respectively.

Jordan was fifth in the 200 meters with a 28.41 while Zenaida Parra was 14th posting a time of 30.72.

Emeri Melendez was fifth in the 3200 posting a time of 13:49.

Douglas’ 4x800 relay team of Hurtado, Melendez, Duarte and Loreto finished second with a state qualifying time of 10:42.

The 4x100 relay team of Parra, Jordan, Rodriguez and Fields also qualified for state with a third place finishing time of 52.06 seconds.

Douglas’ 4x400 relay team of Jordan, Fields, Rodriquez and Duarte placed second with a time of 4:23.

The coaches would like to thank all of the volunteers who came out and helped make this meet run smoothly.

“Without them this meet would not be possible,” Coach Savill said. “A big thanks to our officials Dennis, Randy, Paul and Dan. Another big thanks to our IT Department for running the timing system that helped run our meet efficiently.”
