The Douglas school board met last Tuesday for its second regular monthly meeting.

The board approved the donation of 50 hardcover books, valued at approximately $600 to Sarah Marley from local author Adele M. Crouch. A $250 donation from Lynn and Deborah Marvel on behalf of Dennis Reidy to Faras Elementary was also approved. Reidy was a 1963 DHS graduate who contributed regularly to the DUSD. He passed away last month, said DUSD Superintendent Sheila Rogers.

The board also approved a memorandum of understanding between the district and PSA Art Awakenings for a program at Sarah Marley, Ray Borane Middle School and Douglas High School that will provide art therapy groups between Feb. 1and June 30, 2013.

The board approved the hiring of Ondrea Estrada as a district wide substitute teacher; volunteers Ray Shelton for the girls tennis program and Mishell Quinonez for the girls softball program both at DHS; Tizoc Anaya as a computer tech and Mark Zepeda as a part-time instructional aide.

Resignations/retirements were granted for James Weime as a CTE Law Enforcement teacher effective May 23, 2013; John Bess as a alternative to suspension monitor at DHS effective Feb. 25 and Robert Marrufo, transportation, effective April 25, 2013.

DHS cafeteria worker Soila Chacon had her hours increased and Eddie Molina at Faras; Ana Ingiosi of Ray Borane and Cynthia Encinas of Clawson were all approved to occupy hard to fill positions within the district.

I tell you what. I know not even Ptso parents want to help out!

As far as secruity, there wasn't problems untill they squished a preschool in there. Most teachers there are good and even the janiters ask who you are if your in the halls. Where do you get your info? "

" SHE HAS TO WRITE IN SPANISH BECAUSE 80 % OF PARENTS AT THAT SCHOOL ONLY SPEAK SPANISH! IT would be very inconsiderate and stupid to send letters home to parents only in English. "

" To the parent Who wrote about Clawson you hit the nail on the head! I Just Wish more parents would go to Lopez in person about this. No one really knows what's going on at that school with that so called principal and because of her Clawson will loose it's amazing staff next year! "

" Last I remember, this is America. Why should the secretary have to write in spanish. When we go visit Mexico they don't speak English and write in English for the non spanish speaker. We have to learn the language. One big problem with Clawson and most schools in the district is school security. Anybody can walk into Clawson and no staff bothers to question why one is walking the hallways or what their reason for being inside the school is. This should be priority #1. "

" Mrs. Lopez please visit Clawson!!! What a disgrace it has become, it feels so different from the past years. My daughter is a 4th grader in Mrs. Escalante's class and my niece is 2nd grader in Ms. Lemery's class two amazing and outstanding teachers but the principal is rude, forgetful, never knows whats going on in her school, always in meetings so its hard to make an appt, makes the ptso meeting soooo long and super fake, the atmosphere is very stressful. Please interview the staff. I think you Mrs. Lopez are a better person to go and talk to the Clawson staff. I personally believe that having Ms. Rogers as a super is a huge waste of money. I believe you are highly qualified and fit better in the position of the district's leader. The lady in the front office is nice and she has very little time there but very helpful in what she can help. The girl in the back room needs manners, she is the new secratary so I assume she types the reminders. Well she can't write in Spanish and she has sent out letters to meetings in the wrong date. Please bring Clawson back to its glory and go and visit the school. I have heard that if Ms. Good stays as principal for next year many teachers want out. I too will take my child out and my sister will take my niece and we'll put them in Omega. Because if a district is not listening to the sadness of a school why should we parents leave our children in the district. I am not the only parent that feels this way. "

Questionable mandates wrote on Mar 6, 2013 2:14 AM:

    " "Our Mission

Promoting community volunteer governance of public education and continuous improvement of student success by providing leadership and assistance to public school governing boards.
    Governance & Organization

ASBA is a non-partisan, non-profit organization governed by its members through direct action and an elected Board of Directors. At the annual Delegate Assembly, held in June, all board members "have a voice" in setting the policies and direction of the association" (ASBA, 2013).

It appears that our school board prefers to use the term "mandated" to protect their own interests and policies, rather than the policies set forth by our State Board of Education. "

    A question wrote on Mar 1, 2013 1:53 PM:

" I noticed a line that said revisions were "mandated" by the Arizona School Board Association. Is this association replacing the State Board of Education? I was unaware of any "associations" being able to mandate anything to duely elected officials and that mandates must come from the State Board of Education or the legislature/Governor. Not sure when that changed. "
