Soccer season came to a premature end last week for the second seeded Douglas Bulldogs who were upset 2-0 by the 15th seeded Amphi Panthers in the first round of the 4A state playoffs played at Douglas High School.

The Bulldogs went into the game without the services of senior captain Antonio Orduna, who is known for his acrobatic throw-ins. Douglas’ Coach Ken Cormier said Orduna was not playing for what is being called an “administrative decision.”

As a result of Orduna’s absence, Coach Cormier made some defensive adjustments moving several players around.

Amphi needed just six minutes to take advantage of the adjustments as senior Alan Gomez scored giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead which they would carry to the break.

The Bulldogs came out the second half and put together a series of offensive attacks only to have Amphi goalie Pedro Estuillo block them . Estuillo would finish the night with six saves in the box while Bulldog goalie Marc Gonzalez would have three as Douglas out shot Amphi 11-9.

Amphi sealed the win with a goal by Gomez in the 68th minute handing Douglas its first loss of the season.

“We didn’t play very well for the most part against Amphi,” Coach Cormier said after the loss. “I believe that the players put too much pressure on themselves, each trying to make up for the difference of not having Antonio (Orduna) on the field.”

The coach said he feels his players tried too hard and that the 20 minute late start didn’t help either.

“Once we settled in we battled hard right to the very end,” he said. “You don’t have an undefeated season without a great group of kids and these guys worked hard and did their best at every practice session and at every game this entire season. This team was as good as any soccer team I’ve ever coached and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The Bulldogs end the season 11-1-1. Amphi would go on to lose three days later in the quarterfinals falling 4-3 to Palo Verde after being outshot 3-1 on penalty kicks.

The awards banquet for the Bulldogs will on Friday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Douglas Visitor’s Center.

" please lets not argue with these ignorant people we all know that this kid is constantly in trouble, ineligible, and partying. it does not matter how good he is if he does not do what he has to do which is be a student before being an athlete then he needs to deal with it and accept his fault. thatis the problem with the community too much pampering with the kids which is why they turn out the way they do. i dont care if this kid is better than david beckham if he dont follow rules he should not play. DEAL WITH IT. "

"The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects confidentiality of student records. This act, commonly referred to as the Buckley Amendment, was enacted by the Congress in 1974 to guarantee parents and students a certain degree of confidentiality and fundamental fairness with respect to the maintenance and use of student records. The law is designed to ensure that certain types of personally identifiable information regarding students will not be released without parental consent or, at the age of 18, the students consent." " Dearist Bulldog alumni,

Really?? Do you think that WE as administrators would do this to our kids?? As usual, someone in this community expressing their feelings without knowing all details.

Since we have HIPPA regulations and can not comment on each situation, please ask this child and hope they are truthfull with all details!! "

" In response to the administration not being aware of the individual who was not allowed to play: The incident that caused his inability to play had occurred a year before. The administration knew about the incident and for whatever story they tell, they waited a few days before the game to restrict the player. If the basis of sports is to teach not only the rules of the game but the rules of life. "

" These athletes are called "Student Athletes" for a reason...students first and athletes second..these student athletes are very well aware of what is expected of them...Grades come first!!! As a coach it is disheartening to have one of your players benched for administrative reasons but we must remember that academics comes first. If you can't make the grades you need to be spending time in the classroom not on the field... "

" Really we are to blame the Administration for holding the kid out? I think our Administrators want to win, but they have to do it well within the rules.

Did the kid pass all of his classes? Was everything turned in? Did he fail a drug test – OH wait, we do not test kids in schools…. But you get my point!!

Our Administration really wants to win and see these kids succeed, but at the end of the day they students before athletes and we do not know all of the details! "
