4 local soccer teams compete in Tucson Shootout By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch Four soccer teams from Douglas were in Tucson Jan. 18-20 competing in the Tucson Association of Realtors Shootout, formally know as the Fort Lowell Shootout. The Douglas Dawgs, coached by Jesus “Chuey” Duarte and Robert Enicas went 4-0 in the U13M Bronze division winning the championship 2-1 over a team called the Blue Thunder. There were six teams in the bracket and they were broken up into two pools of three. The Dawgs began the tournament facing the Blue Thunder and coming away with a 2-0 win as Alexes Flores scored both goals. The Dawgs then faced a team called Chain Reaction FC Zoom 2000 and came away with a 5-0 win as Flores scored three goals and Osbaldo Grijalva and David Cruz each had one. The two wins put Douglas into the semifinals where they faced the San Tan Legacy 00 White Boys. Flores and Ortiz each had a goal. In the championship game the Dawgs had a rematch with the Blue Thunder from the opening game. Douglas gave up its first goal of the tournament but still managed to come away with a 2-1 win as Flores and Morales each scored goals for the Dawgs who finished the tournament 4-0. The Douglas United, coached by Marco Romero, Rene Figueroa and Victor Ramos competed in the U12M Bronze division. The United began the tourney tying the Tanque Verde Soccer Club ’01 Boys White team 0-0. In game two the Douglas United beat Region 206 United 2-0 as Juan Pablo Ramos and Alan Ruiz each scored goals. Game three was a semifinal showdown with the Arizona Soccer Club Thunder 01 Boys Gold team. Douglas also won that game 2-0 as Ramos and Ruiz each scored goals for Douglas. In the championship game Douglas fell 2-1 to the Las Cruces Youth Soccer Thunder 2-1 as Ruiz had the lone goal. The Douglas Nightmares, coached by Dessa Montoya, went 0-2-1 in the U10M Romaia division. Douglas played the Tanque Verde Soccer Club 03 LC in game one and lost 3-2. They then fell 4-1 to the Desert Foothills Soccer Club before tying 1-1 the Tucson Soccer Academy Heat. Names of the local athletes who scored goals for Douglas were not provided to the Dispatch. The Douglas Athletics, coached by Jerry Curfman and Ricardo Miranda, went 0-3 in their games losing 7-0 to the Tucson Soccer Academy Red Girls; 4-0 to the CDO Soccer Club ’99 Prospects and 3-0 to the Tanque Verde Soccer Club ‘99G Blue. |
