Local residents wake up to snow By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch Douglas residents woke up New Years Eve morning to see snow falling from the sky and the city covered in white. The flakes began falling shortly before 5 a.m. and continued to fall most of the morning causing many local residents to flock to the local parks where they had snow ball fights, built snow men and even tried sledding down some of the hills. The most significant snow fall was at Airport Park where the snow was an estimated 3-5 inches deep in some places, enough to cover a person’s shoes. According to the National Weather Service, Douglas had an unofficial four inches of snow fall while Bisbee reportedly had eight inches. By midday Monday much of the snow had melted but some snow remained throughout parts of Douglas through Friday. Another brief snow shower on Thursday brought a dusting to the Douglas area which melted in a matter of minutes. December 2009 was the last time Douglas had received any significant snow fall. Local law enforcement officials report no accidents were reported during the snow fall. Another snow fall is expected to hit Douglas this week. |
