And for the second straight year the Lady Bulldogs came in second falling 45-36 this past Saturday ironically by the same score they lost last year.

Both Sabino and Douglas were 3-0 going into the game and the championship is Sabino’s fourth in a row.

Sabino opened the game hitting a three only to see Douglas go on a 9-0 run taking a 9-3 lead.

A bucket and a free-throw by the Sabercats cut Douglas’ lead to 9-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Veronica Barraza’s three to open the second quarter pushed the Lady Bulldogs lead to six.

The Lady Bulldogs led 16-12 when Sabino went on a 7-0 run taking a 19-16 lead.

Barraza tied the game at 19 when she hit a three but Sabino countered with a three and then hit another three pointer just as the second quarter buzzer sounded taking a 25-19 lead at the half.

Sabino padded its lead to 11 in the third and just like last year led by as many as 14 in the fourth before winning by nine.

Douglas had just five players score Saturday. Barraza led Douglas with 14 points while Karina Avechuco followed with 11, Aleen Nunez seven and two other players had two each.

Both Barraza and Nunez were named to the All-Tournament team.

On Friday Douglas squared off against Valley Union. After leading 18-17 at the half the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Devils 11-6 the second half winning 29-23.

Barraza led Douglas in scoring with 12 points while Janella Frantzeskakis followed with nine.

The win gave Douglas a 3-0 record in pool play and placed them into the finals on Saturday.

On Thursday the Lady Bulldogs began the tournament beating San Miguel 60-41.

Douglas led 25-14 at the half before outscoring their opponents 35-27 in the second half.

Barraza led Douglas in scoring with 16 points, Nancy Rodriguez followed with 12. Avechuco and Nunez each followed with eight.

The Lady Bulldogs then played host Tombstone and came away with a 55-34 win.

Douglas led 22-10 at the half and outscored the Lady Yellowjackets 33-24 the second half. Barraza led Douglas in scoring with 14 points. Frantzeskakis followed with nine, Avechuco seven and Rodriguez and Nunez followed with six each.

Douglas, 12-2, was at Catalina on Monday and at Benson on Tuesday before heading to Buena on Friday.
