Lady Bulldogs take two of three

With the post season playoffs jut ahead the Douglas Lady Bulldogs are looking to keep as much momentum as possible going into the post season.

Playing three games in four days last week the Lady Bulldogs took two of the three.

Against Empire on Tuesday, Jan. 15 in the DHS gym, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back cruising to a 57-32 win.

Douglas led 14-4 at the end of the first quarter thanks to back to back three’s from Janella Frantzeskakis and Aleen Nunez.

In the second quarter the Lady Bulldogs kept up their scoring as Frantzeskakis and Nancy Rodriguez each drilled three’s giving Douglas a 28-15 halftime lead.

In the third quarter the Lady Bulldogs outscored Empire 20-4 taking a commanding 48-19 lead into the final quarter.

Frantzeskakis led Douglas in scoring with 11 points while Rodriguez and Karina Avechuco each had 10. Veronica Barraza and Nunez each followed with nine.

Douglas’ basketball coach Clint Hill said he was very happy with his teams performance and happy to get all 12 players on his team some quality playing time.

On Thursday, Jan. 17 the Lady Bulldogs were in Vail taking on the Cienega Lady Bobcats.

Douglas had an 11 point lead in this game but then ended up losing 52-47.

The Lady Bulldogs led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter and 30-21 at the half. Cienega outscored Douglas 14-6 in the third quarter but still trailed by one heading into the fourth where they continued to stymie Douglas outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 17-11.

Barraza led all scorers with a game high 13 points all of which came in the first half. Nunez followed with 11 all of which came in the second half. Rodriguez followed with seven, Avechco six and Frantzeskakis and Sophia Pena each had five.

On Friday the Lady Bulldogs were up the road in Bisbee taking on their rivals the Bisbee Lady Pumas.

Douglas led start to finish this game coming away with a 56-30 win.

The Lady Bulldogs led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter and 35-19 at the half. Douglas

padded its lead in the third with a 15-6 run taking a 50-25 lead into the fourth quarter.

Barraza and Nunez combined for 32 points (each scoring 16) while Avechuco contributed 10.

Coach Hill said afterwards it was a nice bounce back win from the night before.

The Lady Bulldogs, 16-4, have just five games left in their regular season. The Lady Bulldogs hosted Benson last night and will be at Tombstone on Friday.

Next week the Lady Bulldogs have three games all of which are at home. Douglas will host Buena on Tuesday, Rio Rico on Thursday and Cienega on Friday.

In junior varsity action last week the Lady Bulldogs were 1-2. Douglas lost to Empire 36-18 and Cienega 49-29 before beating Bisbee 37-13.

The Douglas freshmen had no games last week. On Jan. 11 the Lady Bulldogs lost to Buena’s freshmen 42-22.

Crystal Zamora led Douglas in scoring with six points. The freshmen have just one more game, Jan. 31 at home against Rio Rico’s freshmen team.
