Fourteen teams from Arizona, New Mexico and Texas were in Douglas this past weekend competing in the 34th Annual Douglas Invitational wrestling tournament.

Sahuaro High School of Tucson was the overall winner finishing with 622 points. Sierra Vista Buena, coached by newly elected Cochise County Sheriff Mark Danell, was second with 551 points. Canyon Del Oro was third with 462 points followed by Bisbee in fourth with 390 points and Douglas fifth with 381.
Other team scores had Americas High of El Paso Tex. With 352, Cortez, New Mexico, 337, Palo Verde 336, Scottsdale Chaparral 333, Socorro, N.M., 322, Salpointe 267, Nogales 260, Baboquivari 222 and Tombstone 150.
Douglas had 13 wrestlers competing leaving the 138-pound class open.
Six of the wrestlers made it to the tournament round Saturday afternoon.
Of the six wrestlers Douglas’ Thomas Montoya was the lone winner winning the 106-pound weight class pinning Zach Dugger of Bisbee in 1:49. Montoya was also selected the outstanding wrestler for the lightweight division finishing the tournament a perfect 9-0.
Israel Andrade, wrestling at 126, finished sixth losing to CDO’s Jeremiah Floyd in the consolation finals. Andrade finished the day 6-2.
At 152-pounds Douglas’ Brandon Moreno dropped a 4-3 decision to Buena’s Cameron Crossley giving him sixth place with a 5-3 record.
At 170, Joe Alvarez was pinned by Buena’s Ray Rivera in 3:46 giving him sixth place also with a 5-3 record.
Carlos Estrada won his 195 pound consolation match by forfeit giving him fifth place with a 7-1 record.
Heavyweight Jason Linden lost by fall to Gilbert Rivera of Cortez in 1:56 giving him sixth place with a 6-3 record.
Other Douglas wrestlers who competed this past weekend but did not make it into the tournament finals were: Rogelio Martinez, 112, 4-3; Christian Ross, 120, 5-2; Jacob Ybarra, 132, 4-3; Saul Salinas, 145, 4-3; Andrew Parra, 160, 4-3; Brandon Cardenas, 182, 4-3 and Antonio Lamadrid, 220, 3-4.
