Due to the general election last Tuesday the Douglas School Board of Education moved their regular monthly meeting up a day to Monday, Nov 5.

At the meeting the board approved the early release from contract for Alexa Hernandez, a teacher at DHS, without liquidated damages and she is also eligible for rehire. Hernandez’ last day was Nov. 9.

In other action the board approved the donations of a trombone from Dr. Ed Gomez to the DHS Band Dept.; a clarinet from Michelle Ortega also to the DHS Band Dept. as well as a donation from Southwest Gas for math graphing paper to the DUSD.

The board approved a list of items that were auctioned off last weekend and approved additional work hours for some cafeteria staff who will now work part time as custodians.

An agreement between the district and the City of Douglas that will allow seniors at DHS to volunteer a minimum of two hours per week at a medical facility to get exposed to the medical field was also approved. With the type of exposure and risk that comes with the functions at the Douglas Fire Dept/Ambulance Service the city requires an agreement for liability reasons. DHS started a biomedical program four years ago for students interested in going into the medical field.

The board spent 40 minutes discussing wording in the Copyright Compliance policy and then decided to table the item until legal clarification on some of the wording can be made.

DUSD Business Manager Cesar Soto updated the board on some emergency repairs that had to be made to the front of the Ray Borane Middle School. Total cost for the repair was $8,370.00.

The board approved the hiring of Cary Varela as a middle school teacher at Ray Borane; Sarah Dolcini as an elementary teacher Stevenson; substitute teachers Clarissa Forest and Shannon O’Hearn; Claudia Syson as a choir volunteer at DHS; Jose Solis, Albert Morales, Louie Moreno, Maria Ramirez and Enrique Hurtado all with the DUSD Maintenance Dept.

Mary Valdez had her resignation approved from the maintenance dept. effective Oct. 18, 2012.

Erin Cinnamon, Maria Cornejo, Guadalupe Ochoa and Alvina Noperi all had their hours increased.

Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday there will be no meeting Nov. 20 and the school and main offices will be closed Nov. 22-23.

The next regular board meeting will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
