The Douglas High School Spiritline, coached by Andrea Arnejo, placed at the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) San Tan state qualifiers in two categories on Nov. 17 at Copper Canyon High School in Glendale.
In order for the squad to advance on to the AIA Spiritline tournament they had to place in the top ten.
The squad had encountered many obstacles this season with injuries and with some team members not being academically eligible.
DHS had to perform with some last minute changes as well. One of the team members had a prior commitment and could not attend.
Arnejo had change the co-ed cheer routine the night before they left for Glendale.
The two boy, one girl partner stunt group went up against 13 groups coming in third. Sahuarita High School came in fifth, Holbrook came in fourth, Bisbee won second, and North Pointe Prep won first place.
The Spiritline squad competed in pom this year against eight other schools. The 11 girl pom team came in fourth. Chino Valley placed fifth, Bagdad came in third, North Point Prep won second, and Estrella Foothills won first place.
The squad also competed in co-ed cheer but did not place. The top five schools were, Sahuarita with fifth place, North Pointe Prep came in fourth, Greenway third, Santa Rita won second place, and Estrella Foothills won first. Bisbee was ninth and advanced to state.
“We didn’t place in cheer but they did great,” said Arnejo.
The partner stunt and pom groups are headed to AIA Spiritline tournament on Feb. 2 in Prescott Valley.
