Chargers honored at banquet By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch A capacity crowd packed into the American Legion Saturday for the Douglas Youth Football and Cheer Leagues year end banquet. League President Ken Nelson recognized his coaches in all four divisions. Nelson said between the football and cheerleaders there were an estimated 175 kids who played this year. The flag Chargers finished the year with a 3-5 record; the mighty mite Chargers went 0-8 and the peewee and midget Charger squads both were 4-3. Nelson presented Enrique “Red” Hurtado, coach of the peewee Chargers, and Carlos Lamadrid, coach of the midget Chargers, with Coach of the Year honors. Each player was given a nice trophy and each coach handed out special awards for the best lineman, MVP, etc. In all an estimated 40 certificates were handed out. Nelson also recognized his cheer coaches who had an outstanding effort at the county competition in Benson Nov. 10. The mighty mite, peewee and midget squads all came in first place while the flag took second. The league president also handed out several special recognition awards to organizations and individuals who helped out the Chargers this past season. Nelson said those players who still have their equipment or did not get their trophy Saturday need to call him at (520) 220-1996 and make arrangements to drop off their equipment and pick up their trophy. He added he will only hold the trophies for a short while. |
