The Centennial Committee held their final event on Oct. 27 with a historic photograph exhibit of Douglas and the dedication of the time capsule at the government center.

An estimated 50 people attended the event and presented an item they wanted put in the time capsule.

The event started with Jael Calia coordinator of the time capsule event followed by Councilman Mitchell Lindemann reading the proclamation.

The capsule was built and designed by the Cochise College welding class and is due to open in 2062.

The committee invites the Douglas community to add a personal item or a way to communicate with the future Douglas residents to the time capsule. The time capsule will be opened until February 14, 2013. It will be locked for good until 2026.

The Centennial October events started with the Douglas Fly In and Pancake Breakfast Douglas at the Douglas International Airport on Oct. 6 and the unveiling of the Replica of Douglas Glider.

On Oct. 13 the committee held an authors and artists weekend at the Gadsden Hotel. On the same day they held the Spirit of Douglas Awards at the government building.

A music festival was held on Oct. 20 at Castro Park with local artist, Keeter Stuart and Mariachi Folklorico 18 featuring songs by Leonardo Yanez.

According to Danny Morales, the Castro play scheduled for Nov. 3 has been canceled.

“Everything came out better than we expected,” Christina Gomez committee member said.
