Music festival brought community together

The 100 years of music event held on Oct. 20 at the Castro Park was a huge success.

An estimated 300 people attended the event which started at 4 p.m. and ended shortly before midnight.

The community came together to enjoy the family friendly entertainment. People sat and listened to music, ate and enjoyed the festive atmosphere.

Local bands that performed at the event were, For Yesterday’s Dreams, MTB Worship Band, the Douglas High School Choir, and The Autumnsfire.

The Centennial Community presented artists Keeter Stuart who sang songs written by his uncle and former Douglas resident Stan Jones.

“It’s a pleasure being here, when I was contacted I was great I’m there,” Stuart said. “I’m trying to keep his (Stan Jones) legacy alive.”

Other artist that performed at the event were Alex Keeme, and Mariachi Folklorico 18 who sang songs by Leonardo Yanez.

Yanez’s great granddaughter Anna Gloria Quiroz Yanez performed many of Yanez’s songs.

“I’m ecstatic that we had such a great turn out tonight. It is a moment in history and time that the whole community showed up. It is a great night of unity it is a great night of celebration,” Centennial Committee member Danny Morales said. “We would love to do this again. I think this is a great foundation that we set here with all the organizations working together I think there’s going to be a demand from the community for more events like this.”

The Centennial Committee will be holding their last event on Oct. 27 with a historic photography exhibit of Douglas at the Government Building from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. There will be a reception from 1-4 p.m. Closing ceremonies for the Centennial begin at 3 p.m. with dedication of the time capsule.

The committee is asking everyone to stop by and send a letter to the future; the time capsule will be opened in 2062.
