The Douglas Bulldogs saw their football season come to an end Friday night with a 50-6 loss to the Cienega Bobcats in Vail.

With the loss the Bulldogs finish the year 1-9; their lone win coming over their rivals the Bisbee Pumas who also finished the year 1-9. Their streak of three straight years in the playoffs also came to an end this year.

Prior to the game Friday Douglas High School football coach Dick Keith told KDAP Radio’s Howard Henderson that he is planning on returning next year as coach unless the DUSD asks him otherwise.

The Bulldogs suited up just 24 players for Friday’s season finale. The Bulldogs were also without the services of defensive coordinator Levi Salazar who was away on family business. Former defensive coordinator Ron Ellsworth stepped in to help for this game only.

Ellsworth’s defense was unable to stop Cienega’s offense who didn’t have its first punt until midway through the third quarter when the game was well out of hand and the subs were in.

Cienega scored the first two times it had the ball taking a 15-0 lead.

Bulldog quarterback Blaze Rose had his pass intercepted on Douglas’ second possession of the game and returned for a score as the Bobcats upped their lead to 22-0.

The Bulldogs had a decent drive going on their third possession and managed to get down to Cienega’s 30 before turning it over on downs.

Cienega made one of its few mistakes on the night fumbling the ball back to Douglas who put together a drive eventually scoring when Grant Watkins found the end zone from a yard out. The Bulldogs missed the extra point and trailed 22-6 at this point.

The Bobcats needed just 20 seconds to score again before the first quarter ended taking a 29-6 lead into the second quarter.

Three scores in less than seven minutes in the second quarter gave Cienega a 50-6 lead and put the game into mercy rule mode meaning the clock would continue to run only to stop for injuries and timeouts.

The Bulldogs had two possessions the rest of the first half but were unable to score and had four total possessions the second half as the running clock sped up the game.

Stats for Friday’s game were not available. Cienega moves on to the post season while the Bulldogs start rebuilding for next year.
