Border Patrol offering citizen’s academy

Guest speaker for the Greater Douglas Chamber of Commerce luncheon last week was Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Edgardo Garayua.

Garayua announced at the luncheon held at the Douglas Unified School District administration office of a Citizen’s Academy held by the Douglas Border Patrol.

The class will meet over the course of seven weeks every Tuesday starting Oct. 16 from 4-8 p.m. at the Douglas Border Patrol station, 1608 Kings Hwy.

Throughout the course, attendees will become familiar with BP's mission and participate in interactive demonstrations such as defensive tactics, and tracking.

Participants will also receive a border tour, and learn about each organization's distinct roles and responsibilities as well as their integrated mission to secure America's borders

The Citizens Academy is a physically demanding experience. Participants must be in good physical condition and be able to walk extended distances in unstable terrain. A limited background check is also required.

Participants must be 18 and over. The class will be limited to 12 participants.

“We want to give the community a better understand on why we do what we do,” Garayua said.

Caryn Ice, Douglas High School Yearbook adviser announced that the yearbook class is currently designing and producing the 2013 yearbook. They are currently seeking sponsors for the yearbook and would greatly appreciate your support with the purchase of an advertisement. Cost of advertisement is: one-eighth of a page $30; one-fourth $60; half a page $100 and a full page ad would be $200.

Chamber President Susan Kramer is asking all downtown merchants who purchased a sign from the high school for D-Week to please keep them up for the Douglas-Bisbee game.

The next chamber luncheon will be held on Nov. 1 at the DUSD administration building patio. Guest speaker will be Tom Riebock with Wick Communications on customer service. Lunch will be free of charge to all chamber members.
