On Sept 5, former Ward 3 City Councilman Ramon “Hedgy” Jordan passed away peacefully at his home.

He was 92.

Jordan was a devoted City Councilman serving five terms from June1984 to June 2004.

He was born in Pirtleville the second of 12 children and attended Douglas High School playing football and basketball before graduating in 1941.

While in high school he met Lupe Garcia who he would marry in 1943 while serving in the U.S. Navy where he served three years enlisting upon graduation from DHS.

Family members say this Oct. 25 would have been their 69th year of marriage.

Jordan began working for the U.S. Postal Service in the early 1950’s eventually retiring as postmaster of the Pirtleville Post Office.

In 1984 he was elected to the Douglas City Council where he would work with four different mayors during his tenure. Jordan worked with former Mayor’s Ben Williams, George Sayers, Elizabeth Ames and Ray Borane.

Former Mayor Ames told the Douglas Dispatch last week she was sad to hear of Ramon’s passing but knew he had been in poor health for quite some time.

“Still the news was a shock,” she said.

Ames and Jordan worked together for six years on the Douglas City Council.

“I considered him a friend,” she said. “He served his constituents well. He contributed his knowledge of the issues we faced thoughtfully and participated in many important discussions and decisions.”

Ames said Ramon and Lupe were a very loving couple who were married for many years and raised their children to be actively involved in city issues.

“He will be missed,” the former Mayor said.

Ramon is survived by his wife, Lupe, his sons Lon and Don and daughters Ginny and Wendy. He also is survived by seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The Jordan family issued a statement to the media regarding the passing of their father.

“The past couple of days since our Dad’s departure have given us an opportunity to reminisce and think about how much out Dad meant to his family,” the statement reads. “The common thought was just how much our Dad dedicated his whole life to his family. He was always there for us with unconditional love. He was our Cub Scout Master, little league coach, Tata when you needed a hug, providing wisdom and guidance for his daughters, a cheerleader when you needed a boost and a standup comic when you needed cheering up.

“His whole life centered around his wife, kids and grandkids. Our father did not tell us or lecture us on how to live; he lived and let us watch him do it. His heritage to us was not words or possessions, but an unspoken treasure, the treasure of his example as a man and a father.”

Funeral services were held this past Monday for the former City Councilman. He was buried with military honors in Douglas.
