Tony Cortez Rose passed away on Sept. 27 after a short battle with cancer surround by loved ones.

Tony Rose with former teammate Bill Salzbrenner and Rose's sister Margaret Baldenegro reconnected at a fundraiser for Rose last month.

Rose, 54, will always been known by the Douglas community as one of the best football hero’s around.

He was named Offensive Player of the Year in 1976, his career totals were 279 completions in 694 attempts for 5,281 yards, 65 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He also had 851 yards rushing and a total touchdown responsibility of 83, or 20.75 per year that he played.

According to his former teammates, he was not only special on the field but off the field.

Friends, family, and community members who knew and respected Rose; fans who had seen this amazing and powerful player on the field and off came together to support him in any way they could during his battle.

During a recent golf tournament friends came together to reconnected with Rose.

Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 28 4:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church; a rosary to follow at 7 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will held Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1:30 p.m. also at St. Luke’s Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Brown Page Mortuary is in charge of arrangements, 364-3434.

" 1976 starting halfback Bobby Watcott is injured they call up a 130 pound J.V. halfback to help fill the void. My first day with the varsity I stay in the background trying not to be noticed. All of a sudden out of no where two time All-State Quarterback working on his third Tony Rose appears right in front of me, puts his arm around me and says, "Welcome rookie." I only spent two weeks with the varsity but I never forgot what Tony Rose did. That was Tony Rose not only a great athlete but a great person. "
