Local team places fourth at tournament

The Douglas Girls Basketball Club finished fourth out of 12 teams at the Mountain View High School Basketball Tournament which was held June 10-11.

Douglas opened up the tournament losing to Tucson High 32-23 and host Mountain View 50-41 before winning three straight games.

Against Tucson High Linda Lopez led Douglas in scoring with eight points. Karina Avechuco followed with six, Nythzia Machado four and Aileen Nunez three.

Against the host team Machado led Douglas with 15 points, Nunez followed with 11, Lopez had five and Avechuco four.

After the two losses Douglas came back to beat Casa Grande 46-26 as Machado scored 15 points, Avechuco and Lopez each followed with eight, Nunez and Janella Frantzeskakis each had five and Kassandra Hill four.

Douglas then disposed of St Johns 49-25 as Machado and Avechuco combined for 20 points, Lopez had nine, Kayla Vasquez seven and Aileen Nunez six. Jessica Hurtado had three and Danae Meza and Vivi Valdez each scored two.

Douglas then closed out the tournament beating Sabino 43-33 as Nunez scored 14 points, Machado 13, Avechuco four and Vasquez, Hill and Lopez each scored three.

The team is being coached by Clint Hill, Lorena Tapia and Tony Vasquez.

Coach Vasquez said this tournament really provided some stiff competition which is what this team needed.

“I’m glad we went to this tournament,” he said. “It turned out to be a really good experience for the girls.”

The Douglas Girls are playing in a summer league tournament every Tuesday in St. David.

The teams play a minimum of two games per night.
