Tennis season ended last week for the Douglas High School boy’s tennis team who fell 5-4 to Seton Catholic, a private school out of Chandler, in the second round of the 4A DII state playoffs.

The loss was the first of the season for a Bulldog squad that had won 15 straight. Unfortunately the loss came in the single elimination tournament – thus ending Douglas’ season.

Doubles play began the match Tuesday.

The Bulldogs No.1 doubles team of DJ Campas and Joe Owen lost their match 1-8.

Spencer Gijalva and George Watkins won their match 8-4 and Brandon Young and Joaquin Nunez fell 6-8.

In singles play Campas fell 3-6, 3-6; Owen lost 2-6, 3-6; Nunez won 6-4, 6-4; Watkins won in three losing the first set 4-6 before coming back to win the next two sets 6-3, 7-5.

Grijalva was a 6-3, 6-3 winner and Young fell 4-6, 2-6.

Seton Catholic would go on to play in the state championships Saturday before losing 5-0 to Scottsdale Arcadia.

The Bulldogs end the year with a 15-1 record.
