Lady Bulldog hoopsters extend win streak

With the 4A DII state playoffs scheduled to start in two weeks the Douglas Lady Bulldogs basketball team continues to keep pressure on league leading Palo Verde.

The Lady Bulldogs remain one game back of league leading Palo Verde who comes to Douglas this Friday night for a key Gila Regional showdown that could decide the league championship.

Douglas, winners of four straight games including wins this past week over Santa Rita and Sahuarita, will have a key Gila Regional showdown this Friday night when Palo Verde comes to town.

The Lady Titans have a one-game lead over second place in the regional standings and Friday’s game could determine the regional championship.

Last week Douglas disposed of Santa Rita 59-23 before thumping Sahuarita 59-35 on Friday.

Nythzia Machado and Erika Tapia combined for 27 points in the Lady Bulldogs win over Santa Rita. Gabriela Valencia followed with nine.

Douglas led this game from the start up 18-6 at the end of the first quarter and 43-14 at the half.

In the third quarter Douglas outscored Santa Rita 11-0 taking a 54-14 lead into the final period.

Against Sahuarita the Lady Bulldogs used a 10-0 run early in the second quarter to take an 11-7 lead and increase it to a 21-7 margin.

The Lady Bulldogs led 25-11 at the half and continued to pad their lead in the second half leading 49-27 early in the fourth.

Tapia finished with a game high 23 points this night. Valencia had 12 and Machado 10.

Douglas’ coach Clint Hill said his team is really playing well right now and wanting another shot at Palo Verde this Friday night.

The Lady Titans beat Douglas, 14-2, 53-46 in the earlier game at Palo Verde.

The Douglas coach says this team is playing up to its potential and has the opportunity to host a first round state playoff game when the state tournament begins Feb. 16.

Junior varsity

The Douglas JV’s improved their record to 10-2 Friday after beating Sahuarita’s JV’s 33-29.

Linda Lopez led Douglas in scoring with 15 points. Marisela Palma followed with seven, Janella Franteskakis chipped in five and Kelly Ruiz contributed four.

Douglas’ JV coach Lorena Tapia said her team continues to play well and shows signs of improvement each time they step on the court.
