Former Douglas Mayor and DUSD Administrator Ray Borane was selected to finish out the school year as the chief administrative office for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Borane had already agreed on a contract of only $1 for that time period, and will begin on  February 4.

The Board unanimously approved his appointment at the Tuesday meeting.

Borane  served as the assistant to the president of Northern Arizona University from 1993 to 1995, the deputy state superintendent of public instruction from 1988 to 1993, the superintendent of the Douglas Unified School District from 1976 to 1988, and the president of the Arizona State Board of Education.

He began his career in Arizona as a Spanish teacher at Douglas High School.

He is a graduate of Arizona State University and performed graduate studies at the University of Bogota in Colombia and the University of Guadalajara in Mexico.

The board also agreed to a $3,5000  fee and to have the Arizonqa School Board Association conduct a search for a new superintendent. It is hoped that a choice can be made and be in Douglas before the end of the school year.

" Dear parent, I also think that we must show the positive that is going on in the district. I do however think that people who work for the schools and the parents have tried to get out what is going on so that things can be changed. There are some issues from what I hear/read, that seems are not getting addressed or even acknowledged. Could these people think that this is the only other thing that they can do to let others know and protect their kids? I hope that Ray Borane does not take a back seat and allow others to continue to flounder as we have been this year. It is too bad that the state or other agency doesn’t come in and investigate these complaints and concerns. I am thrilled that things are thriving at those schools; at least appears to be. I am saddened that the negative is all that comes out but I feel the parents and staff must put the negative out there to get something done. When the major issues are fixed then the positive will shine through and we can focus on that. There are great teachers, aides, and directors, but just like anywhere a few rotten apples can spoil the bushel if they aren’t removed. I don’t think that people are encouraging others to make negative comments; I think they are trying to get them to be knowledgeable and fix the problems. I am proud to be a Douglas parent and I know that after some things are taken care of we will be in great shape! "

I agree that we need to start celebrating our schools successes. Sadly, we don't have many at Huber! I won't get into details or names but it's a REAL MESS over here. Mr. Borane, please come over here and help get us on the right track. "

Mr. Goddard please help!!!!!! If he doesn't do something, at least for show, he shouldn't even bother campaigning in Douglas. I know I would vote for Republican candidate if he doesn't do anything regardless of candidate. "

" It sure would be nice if the Dispatch or even the people who blog would focus on the successes some of our schools are having. I have a son at Sarah Marley Elem. and a daughter at RBMS. I am not as active as I should be but I am very aware of my children's education. I know there are great things happening at both of these schools that should be celebrated. My daughter brought a newslettter home explaining that RBMS student attendance increased from 88% to 93% (850+ days difference)and parental attendance at parent/teacher conferences went from 19% to 93%? I beleive it also talked about DRASTIC decrease in suspensions and discipline referrals and a MAJOR increase in student achievement. Why don't we ever talk about these good things and the good people in our district and in our schools? DUSD has good teachers, good aides, good principals, good directors, and all we do is complain! What about the number of students testing out of the ELL program at both middle schools, why don't we celebrate this feat? And what about Sarah Marley going from "Underperforming to "Performing Plus" in one year? We should of thrown a HUGE party for this accomplishment! People write on this blog encouraging others to complain, well I'm writing to encourage others to help celebrate the successes. This is the first step in rebuilding our image!!!! "

" Is this your best defense? You sound like a nut and may very well be a member of the School Board, maybe the waffler RIVERA? Petis and your School Board deserve each other, their interest is not in the community but are self serving. Who else could waste tax payer monies on such foolishness?
1st, DUSD had legitimate reasons to question Petit's actions, however, they chose to go after him because of their emotional ties, Hoyak because of his wife, Rivera because his wife was fired from DUSD and Ramirez because she doesn't like him. If they had stuck to valid reasons and just followed the law they would not be in this mess "

" When are the employees and parents going to start reporting what is going on at their schools? I plead as a parent that Mr. Borane you go and spend time at the different schools, and speak to the employees that work there. I Mr. Borane would be very interested to hear what some of them have to say. I, while walking around two of the schools have overheard employees speaking and was appalled by what is going on. Especially what is going on at Huber Middle School. My niece is a sixth grader there and I would have never thought that children her age would be exposed to explicit videos of women and men on the school computers and the principal would do nothing about it. One thing that Mr. Pettit hardly did was visit the schools during events. If he did on very rare occasions he would walk with his head down and wouldn’t speak to anyone. Maybe if he had been there speaking to staff and parents; people would have felt more like he cared. "

" I went to dollar tree today and asked for the superintendent dept. They said they were all sold out. Turns out Douglas got the last one. Sunnyside was behind me in line.
It does help out the district but please remember Borane has a nice pension from his service and double dipping may be a problem. Now lets just watch the credit card and the Basha contracts. It is nice to know that Hoyack,Rivera, or even the county attorney won't mess with the day to day of the district for at least 6 months.
I hope Mr. Goddard does something before this board is charged with hiring a new superintendent. I really believe this board has proven to be guilty of very, very bad judgement. Ms. Kramer or Ramos should make a motion to inquiry with AG on investigation and get legal advice on whether this board should act with a lawsuit and investigation of illegal activity underway. "

Now, help us get Mr. Pettit back where he belongs, and Hoyack, Rivera and Lopez off the board. Lest we forget Anne Carl also needs to be removed from any influence with district legal counsel. And let’s all move on! "

They should also be placed on a float on the next parade as the most ignorant, selfish self serving group of law breaking ego maniacs. Petit maybe just as guilty. I can't believe this group to be so disrespectful of the citizens they serve. "
